SoftSmile Vision is SoftSmile Inc.’s orthodontic planning software that turns 3D scans of a patient’s teeth into a staged clear aligner setup the doctor can review, edit and approve. The FDA cleared it through the 510(k) process in December 2021 (K212770), and SoftSmile’s support page lists the software at $50 per exported case (checked October 19, 2026).
Quick verdict
SoftSmile Vision suits an orthodontist or aligner lab that wants detailed control over staging, attachments, IPR and bite, and the FDA record backs the core planning use. You can buy it two ways: license the software and plan cases yourself, or send cases to SoftSmile, whose orthodontists set them up in Vision and whose partner lab makes the aligners, the vendor says.
The gaps are evidence and privacy. No published study naming the product turned up in PubMed, and none of the saved vendor pages mention HIPAA or a BAA. The support page also lists several tools still in development. Ask for a BAA and a demo before you upload patient scans.

What is SoftSmile Vision?
SoftSmile Vision is planning software for clear aligner cases. You upload a patient’s scans, the software prepares the 3D models, and the case is staged into a series of aligner steps that the doctor reviews and approves before anything is made. The FDA summary describes it as software that imports 3D digital scans, lets the user plan orthodontic treatment, and outputs STL files for making dental casts.
You can buy it in two forms. SoftSmile’s support page describes the VISION Web Portal, a cloud-based case management system for doctors and manufacturers, with a doctor-facing editor and a browser viewer. Its home page now leads with SoftSmile Aligners, a service in which, the vendor says, an orthodontist on SoftSmile’s team sets up every case in Vision and the aligners are made in the US by an exclusive partner lab. SoftSmile says more than 1,000 doctors use it and that over 10,000 Vision treatment plans are developed each month.
For the aligner service, the vendor gives a typical turnaround of up to 24 hours from scan upload to case review, then 10 business days for manufacturing plus standard US shipping. If a case is late, its features page says the next case is free.
Key features
SoftSmile’s features and support pages say Vision covers the whole aligner setup, starting with scan cleanup and ending with print-ready models.
- Scan preparation: the system segments teeth, removes artifacts and aligns the uploaded scan automatically, the vendor says. TrueView is its name for the tooth segmentation.
- Staging: simultaneous tooth movements, preset speed profiles, custom sequences and pauses, set per tooth or per group.
- Attachments and elastics: pre-loaded attachment libraries, automatic placement rules, custom shapes and sizes, and planning for elastics and bite ramps.
- IPR and collisions: single IPRs or IPRs for all collisions, with values and timing you can change; collision detection between teeth.
- BiteControl: a virtual articulator with adjustable articular angles, jaw displacement and hinge movement simulation, cephalometric analysis, CBCT and an occlusion map at each stage.
- Matching: upload a progress scan and see deviations from the plan tooth by tooth.
- Phantom: a view of the forces between the aligner and the tooth, the vendor says.
- Analysis tools: Bolton analysis, a lock tooth option, a pontic tool, a space manager for each tooth’s center of rotation, and support for supernumerary teeth.
- Print preparation: hollow, ribbed or solid models, custom blockouts and fillers, trimline design and .PTS trimline export.
- Vision Viewer: browser access to plans from any device without installing software, for review, comments, approval and showing patients their plan.
- Case management: roles, permissions and tasks for team members, saved treatment preferences, and no limit on users per license.
The support page, saved on October 19, 2026, lists several things Vision can’t do yet: keep more than one treatment plan in a case, zoom into attached images, wax over or block out undercuts, change the base trim angle, trim models for vertical printing and show an archform guide. The features page lists custom blockouts under print preparation, so ask which applies to the version you’d use.
SoftSmile Vision vs. what a treatment planning tool should have
On the vendor’s pages and the FDA record, SoftSmile Vision fully meets three of the five must-haves. FDA coverage is Partial, because the 2021 summary doesn’t mention some features the vendor now advertises, and there is no BAA or HIPAA statement.
Must have
| Feature | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| FDA clearance that covers the planning use the vendor advertises | Partial | K212770 covers analysis, treatment simulation and design of casts for aligners or retainers. The 2021 summary doesn’t mention CBCT, force views or AI. |
| Imports the practice’s scan data | Listed | STL from any scanner and CBCT data, per the vendor; the FDA summary lists STL, OBJ, JPG, BMP and PNG |
| The clinician reviews, edits and approves every plan | Listed | The vendor says final approval always rests with the doctor |
| Exports files a lab or printer can use | Listed | STL output per the FDA summary; solid or hollow models and .PTS trimlines per the vendor |
| Data protection: BAA offered, security page | Not listed | No HIPAA or BAA statement on the saved pages |
Should have
| Feature | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| A published study that names the product | Not listed | None found in PubMed on October 20, 2026; the vendor cites Palone et al., 2025 |
| Progress tracking against the plan | Listed | Matching compares progress scans with the plan |
| Patient-facing view of the plan | Listed | Vision Viewer |
| Bite and occlusion analysis | Listed | Virtual articulator, occlusion map, cephalometric analysis |
| Public pricing | Listed | Software and design service only; aligner pricing on request |
Nice to have
| Feature | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Integration with the practice’s PMS | Partial | The vendor offers integration with a customer’s patient management system only above 1,000 cases a month |
| Outsourced planning service | Listed | SoftSmile orthodontists set up cases |
| Browser access without installing software | Listed | Vision Viewer |
| Multiple users with roles and permissions | Listed | No limit on users per license |
Whatever the software proposes, the treatment plan stays the treating doctor’s call.
What the research says
No published study naming SoftSmile turned up in PubMed when we searched titles and abstracts for “SoftSmile” on October 20, 2026. Any claim about how well Vision’s setups or segmentation perform comes from the vendor.
On its features page, SoftSmile says its tooth segmentation was “validated by an independent, peer-reviewed study (Palone et al., 2025)”. That paper did not come up in our search, and we have not read it, so we can’t report its design, size or results.
The FDA summary for K212770 describes non-clinical testing only: software verification and validation, which the summary says met its acceptance criteria. It reports no clinical study.
FDA status and privacy
SoftSmile Vision is FDA 510(k) cleared. The FDA’s 510(k) database lists K212770, a device named Vision from SoftSmile, Inc., cleared on December 21, 2021 as substantially equivalent to uLab Systems’ uDesign treatment planning software. It is a Class II, prescription-use device under the Dental panel, product code PNN.
The indications for use, shortened: Vision provides tools for managing orthodontic models, inspection, analysis, treatment simulation and virtual design of a series of dental casts, which may be used for sequential aligner trays or retainers. It can be used before treatment, during treatment to check progress, and at the end to see whether the outcome matches the planned objectives. Users need training and domain knowledge in orthodontics, plus dedicated training in the software.
The summary lists STL, OBJ, JPG, BMP and PNG as supported inputs and STL files as output. It describes the software as submitted in 2021 and doesn’t mention CBCT data, force visualization or AI, which the vendor’s pages now advertise.
On privacy, none of the saved pages (home, features, support and privacy policy) mention HIPAA or a BAA. The home page says SoftSmile’s cloud-based software “prioritizes security, minimizing breach risks and ensuring regulatory compliance.” The privacy policy says SoftSmile uses “appropriate physical, technical and organizational security measures” and may collect, use and keep data in the United States and other countries. If you plan to upload patient scans, ask SoftSmile for a BAA in writing first.
Pricing
The listed price for SoftSmile Vision is $50 per exported case, on SoftSmile’s support page checked on October 19, 2026. You don’t pay for cases you don’t export, and the page says there are no monthly fees.
- Vision software: $50 per exported case, no cap on cases.
- Full case design by SoftSmile: $120 per case, including 3 revisions.
- Volume: discounts discussed case by case above 500 cases a month.
- SoftSmile Aligners: pricing on request.
For the aligner service, the home page (checked October 20, 2026) says each case includes unlimited refinements, one extra free shipping for replacements and one free aligner replacement if a patient loses trays, with no minimum case commitment. The FAQ on the same page says refinements are included depending on the complexity of a case. Onboarding and training are free, the vendor says.
Who it’s for
Orthodontists and aligner specialists are who SoftSmile Vision is built for, the vendor says, along with labs that design aligner cases. The FDA clearance requires users trained in orthodontics and in the software.
The software license fits if you want to plan cases yourself and pay per case. To hand the setup to someone else and still edit it, use the aligner service. If your practice needs a signed BAA up front, published evidence on the product, or integration with your management system at modest volume, the saved pages don’t offer them.
